Numeracy

The focus of the numeracy program within the College is multifaceted.

Students in years 7-10 participate in the ‘Maths Pathways’ program which identifies their strengths and weaknesses and enables students to work at their individual point of need. This allows for more personalised and targeted interactions between staff and students.

At years 7-10 students also complete weekly Problem Solving classes. Using a structured process students are required to interpret, analyse and solve worded problems.

Once a week students, at years 7 and 8, participate in a scaffolding program that specifically targets numeracy skills. Classes are timetabled together so students can be suitably grouped, based on testing, to work through student centred tasks to build their knowledge and understanding of arrays, place value, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion. Extra teachers are assigned to these classes to give students maximum support.

At VCE level students can choose subjects that are suitable for their own pathways. Options available are VCAL Numeracy or VCE General and Further maths, Mathematical methods or Specialist maths.

All of our programs are data driven and help to identify the learning needs of students that enable them to engage with mathematical concepts at their own level. This leads to improved learning and outcomes for our students.
