Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects provide industry specific training as well as the opportunity to achieve nationally recognised qualifications.

They enable students to gain formal qualifications while still at school as a part of their school program.

VET programs offered by Swan Hill College are at either Certificate 2 or Certificate 3 level.

Students can commence a VET program in Years 10, 11 or 12

Students may enrol in up to 2 VET programs at a time as per acceleration policy

NOTE: STUDENTS WISHING TO UNDERTAKE A VET PROGRAM IN AN INDUSTRY AREA THAT IS NOT LISTED IN THIS HANDBOOK SHOULD CONTACT THE VET STAFF IN THE CAREERS OFFICE TO ARRANGE A MEETING TO DISCUSS OPTIONS.

Why choose a VET course?

• You gain valuable industry skills
• VET gives you the chance to ‘try out’ a career to see if it is the right one for you
• It gives you the chance to participate in work placement, meeting employers and gaining references
• Doing work placement and meeting employers increases your chances of gaining a school based or a full time apprenticeship or traineeship
• Work placement helps you to demonstrate community or industry involvement when applying for scholarships
• VET courses provide credit towards both VCE and VCAL certificates

VET credit into VCE & VCAL

VET in School’s programs are fully recognised for both VCE and VCAL credit.

VCE students:

• VET subjects are recognised for credit within the Unit 1 & 2 and Unit 3 & 4 VCE structure. Most VET subjects contribute to an ATAR like a VCE subject would, exceptions are Automotive and Building and Construction and Agriculture.
• Scored VET subjects provide a study score to contribute towards the ATAR if students complete SACs and the exam in their second year – the same as any other VCE subject!
• Non-scored VET subjects (without SACs or exams) may also contribute to the ATAR as a 5th or 6th subject by adding 10% of the average of the students four best study scores

VCAL students:

• VET subjects are recognised for credit towards Foundation, Intermediate and Senior VCAL certificates
• VET subjects are a compulsory part of all VCAL programs
